Description

1926 Indian Head Quarter Eagle, Philadelphia Mint

This 1926 $2.50 gold piece represents the twelfth and penultimate issue in Bela Lyon Pratt's acclaimed recessed-design series for the Indian Quarter Eagle. Struck at the Philadelphia Mint with a standard mintage of 446,000 pieces, this coin exemplifies the final years of quarter eagle production before the denomination ceased in 1929. The reverse features Pratt's distinctive incused eagle design, while the obverse displays a Native American profile—a groundbreaking artistic approach for U.S. coinage at the time.

Graded PCGS MS64 (Certificate #06633439), this example displays the characteristic frosty, lustrous surfaces typical of quality Mint State specimens from this issue. The warm golden tones and well-preserved strike reflect careful handling since the coin's release over ninety years ago. While the 1926 Philadelphia is more readily available than some other dates in the series, conditionally attractive pieces remain desirable among collectors.

Composed of 90% gold and 10% copper, this quarter eagle contains approximately 0.12 troy ounces of pure gold. The reeded edge and 18mm diameter are consistent with the series specifications. Numismatist David Akers ranked the 1926-P as moderately scarce for Gem availability, noting it remains easily obtainable in lower Mint State grades—a assessment that continues to hold true. An excellent addition to any Indian Quarter Eagle or pre-1933 gold collection.
