1874 Gold Dollar, Type III, Philadelphia Mint, PCGS MS-63
This 1874 Philadelphia gold dollar represents a readily available example from the later years of the Type III Liberty Gold Dollar series (1856-1889). Struck from 198,800 pieces, the 1874-P is among the most commonly encountered dates in the series, second only to the 1862. The coin displays the characteristic design by James Barton Longacre, featuring Lady Liberty in profile on the obverse and an eagle with shield on the reverse.
The MS-63 grade reflects a coin with attractive eye appeal and light wear consistent with the designation. The technical specifications show the standard composition of 90% gold and 10% copper, with a weight of 1.7 grams and diameter of 14.3mm. The reeded edge is properly preserved, indicating minimal handling.
An important note for collectors: the 1874 is known to exist in three distinct varieties related to the LIBERTY inscription—examples appear with full LIBERTY, partial LIBERTY, and with LIBERTY missing entirely. Collectors should examine their specimen to determine which variety is present. With a PCGS population showing 1,064 examples graded higher and 970 total coins certified, this date remains accessible to collectors at all levels, including in gem uncirculated condition.
